THE QUARTERLY REPORT is a physical publication that is sent in the mail or purchased in your favorite bookstore or magazine shop. ISSUE NO. 5 is 132 pages, full color, and 7 x 9 inches. Each issue is slightly smaller than the previous in terms of size so that they can eventually stack like a pyramid.
THE QUARTERLY REPORT is a report of the things creative people think about when they are not doing their work.
In ISSUE NO. 5, Artist Tauba Auerbach takes us into the world of change-ringing, which involves intricately timed bell-ringing in cathedrals and bell towers, an art that’s hidden in plain sight...or, rather, plain sound. Filmmaker Matt Muir dives into the alluring and smarmy world of 1980s neo-noir, exploring how the American cultural rules of that decade affected the plots of films like Body Heat and Blood Simple. Spoiler alert: The femme fatale often comes out ahead. Writer Kate Sweeney dives into baseball spring training in Arizona, exploring rituals and rabbit holes, and the perception that we might be able to magically change reality. McSweeney’s Quarterly editor and writer Rita Bullwinkel also explores the magic of reality through ritual and meditation in her collection of Tantra paintings, which she sees every day in the dining room of her home. Cinematographer Mike Simpson describes the simplicity and beauty of cycling. His report includes photos from his rides in Los Angeles and the wider world. Mila De La Torre, a New York–based photographer, offers us a glimpse into the secret community of a small Romanian social club in Queens, while artist and writer Sarah Hotchkiss reports on the state of billboards in San Francisco and their history both in the art world and, more recently, in the tech world. Finally, artist, filmmaker, and former gallerist Griff Williams contributes his thoughts on the artist’s studio in our “Where It Comes From” essay, exploring the struggle of a creative practice in the face of the pending AI storm.
